In this guest blog post, our resident green beauty expert Ellie Gill reveals her top tips for natural make-up and care for the skin in the heat.
Summer approached in fits and starts but finally the sunshine has arrived and with it lovely long days and the opportunity to stay out in the warmth for hours. The vitamin D is most welcome but overexposure to sun and heat can also damage the skin. Cosmetics need to be sparingly applied in such glaring light, to avoid a clogged appearance and to allow the skin to breath.
I like to keep my beauty routine a little simpler in the summer and I’m really not comfortable sweating under layers of heavy cream or make-up. Light and fresh are my buzzwords.
My favourite way to cool down in the warmer months is with a spritz of aromatic water. I always carry some in my handbag. A gentle mist of floral water feels incredibly therapeutic but it also quenches dry, sun exposed skin and keeps my complexion looking fresh. I don’t worry about applying a fine mist over make-up, it can seal it in and add a dewy sheen. Keep your aromatic water in the fridge for extra coolness and a vitalising pick-me-up on a muggy day. My clients always tell me that the A.S.APOTHECARY Orange Blossom Aromatic Water is the scent of summer in a bottle!
I personally prefer to use lighter serum or face oil rather than heaver creams in the summer. My absolute favourite is Intense Repair Face Serum #3 from A.S Apothecary. It is so rich and full of amazing plant therapeutics but is not at all oily, it sinks into the skin perfectly and works well layered under sunscreen. You may find that you don’t need to exfoliate quite so much as you did during the winter months. Perhaps try using the A.S Apothecary Bioactive Mineral Powder once every 3-4 weeks to gently remove any dead skin cells. It contains Hebridean Kelp which exfoliates where needed and effectively brightens the complexion. You can also apply it as a healing mask blended with raw honey or cooling yogurt.
It’s an obvious one but hydration is vital for healthy, radiant skin. We sweat so much more during the summer so keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Drinking lots of water will make a visible improvement to the skin, in terms of brightness and suppleness, within days.
Something people often ask me this at time of year is, How to I keep my makeup from disappearing in the heat?
There isn’t a definite answer to this one. If you’re using long-wear makeup it’s likely to have some pretty dodgy synthetic ingredients lurking in there! I would suggest keeping your makeup, (particularly base) to a minimum and touching it up throughout the day, as you need to. It’s usually better to invest in better quality, natural make-up products than cheaper brands which won’t last as long on the skin
Green People is a wonderful brand, they make natural organic make-up products with natural minerals and pigments that are light but long lasting. The muted pinks and berry or nude hues for lipstick and powder blush look great in Summer and early Autumn months.
Cream eyeshadows and blushers are a good choice for use on the go, as they are so easy to blend and correct with your fingers and work well on even on warm or damp skin. This certified organic cream gold by Inika can be used on eyes, brows or cheekbones and is great for adding a swipe of glamour, a subtle golden sheen and defining highlights, for a dewy summer complexion.
