People sometimes ask us how they should use our aromatic waters (hydrosols). Flower waters are seen by some as too subtle and gentle to be really effective, or simply as a superfluous indulgence in our daily skincare ritual. Our response is that it depends which hydrosol you are using. Our own aromatic waters are, in fact, equally as powerfully moisturising and healing as our face cream for the skin, and offer many other uses besides.
The way we distil keeps the essential oils suspended in our A.S.APOTHECARY hydrosols so they are replete with potent plant therapeutics that offer multiple benefits. As well as having a profoundly positive effect on mood, the active oils in our flower waters help to heal, nourish and improve the appearance of the skin, both at its surface, and deeper into the epidermis. It is precisely because of the way we distil; traditionally, slowly, carefully, and with the greatest respect for the plant, that the therapeutics in the essential oils remain active and dynamic. Sadly this is not the case for most manufactured hydrosols. Most hydrosols you find on the shelves are a by-product of the essential oil industry where processes (that focus on profit over quality) violently steam the plants during a speedy and aggressive mechanised production. This reduces or even destroys the efficacy of the flower waters. Additionally, the ingredients used at the start of production often aren’t in the optimal state for distilling, at worst, we have seen ‘flower waters’ that are not even plant based but a chemical cocktail that apes the floral scent.
“At A.S.APOTHECARY we are always only a few steps away from the plants we use, literally.”
We either grow the plants we use ourselves, or we travel to them. The plants ingredients we use are fresh and come from healthy plants that are loved and cared for and cultivated without the use of pesticides or artificial fertilisers.
In April each year Amanda travels to Cyprus to gather the Rose Geranium and Orange Blossom we use in these two Aromatic Waters. The plants are then distilled almost immediately after they are picked to harness all of that tremendous botanical power and distilled painstakingly slowly, sometimes for up to 14 hours. The reason we use Cypriot Geranium is because the version grown in the UK does not offer the same quality or yield of essential oils. And Cypriot Orange Blossom…well, you can imagine the beguiling scent on a balmy Mediterranean evening, again, that genus is simply not available in the UK.
Geranium - benefits
For the skin
Rich in antioxidants, flavonoids and dozens of beneficial phytochemicals, Geranium oil has potent anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties. It has been used for centuries in skin tonics, creams and balms for conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, oily skin, spots and acne. This oil helps to balance the skin’s production of oil and can help to fade scars and blemishes.
For the emotions
The aroma of geranium is calming to the nervous system and helps to relieve nervous tension, diffuse anger and aggression. It is also very effective at balancing the hormones during the menstrual cycle and the perimenopause and menopause. As well as lifting the spirits Geranium helps to improve concentration and brain clarity.
Orange Blossom – benefits
For the skin
For the skin this sumptuous flower oil offers a wealth of benefits, and can support skin health by regenerating cells and keeping the skin elastic. It can also reduce breakouts and acne and help to prevent the appearance of stretch marks and scars, as well as helping to heal broken capillaries.
For the emotions
Alluring and sweet, this calming floral scent tangibly uplifts the moods on inhalation and can help alleviate anxiety and heart palpitations, and even relieve insomnia. Egyptian priests and priestesses used this delightful oil in many of their spiritual rituals to heal the body, mind and spirit.
All A.S.APOTHECARY products can be used in combination for the perfect nutrition for your skin. Cleanse the skin using a few drops of our Cleansing Oil, rinse off with warm water and then finally, drench the skin in Geranium or Orange Blossom Aromatic Water and do not wipe away but apply our Face Cream or Wild Beauty Balm while the skin is still damp. This will lock in the healing flower therapeutics and deeply moisturise the epidermis. If using make-up, spray lightly to fix cosmetics in place for a dewy appearance.
Our Aromatic Waters can also be used as a refreshing and uplifting spritz throughout the day, especially welcome whilst travelling, or to pleasantly scent and energise a room.
