At A.S.APOTHECARY we are passionate about sharing the stories of brands that share our values, both in terms of traditional, sustainable processes and exceptional quality. As part of our theme of 'Home' this month, we wanted to celebrate the linen brand, Linenme. Linenme is a Lithuanian family business who draw on the time-tested traditions of hand weaving and decorating combined with modern technology to produce beautiful, natural and durable linen products. Here, Content and Feature's Editor Lulah Ellender explains what it is that makes this artisanal linen brand so unique.
There is something special about linen, about the crumples and creases, and the soft forgivingness of its slubby cloth. One Lithuanian linen brand, LinenMe, believe it's not just special, it's magical. LinenMe's motto is 'Your story told in linen' and it's this belief in the unique and inherent longevity of this ancient fabric that underpins all their products. Think vintage linen tablecloths which hold tales of family celebrations, of births and feasts and deaths. Think curtains that were remade into children's dresses. Think napkins that have mopped, cleaned and soothed the skin of generations. All these stories inspire LinenMe's designs and pieces.
LinenMe is the brainchild of Inga Lukauskiene, a Lithuanian-born lover of all things linen. In fact, linen is tightly woven into Inga’s family history. Her mother worked in a Soviet-era linen factory, and after Lithuanian independence her parents set up their own linen production company. Their first client was a Danish businessman who wanted bespoke hand-stitched linen napkins. The business grew, and as a young girl Inga and her sister helped their mother with marketing whilst a team of seamstresses worked in their living room-cum-sewing workshop. Inga grew up against a backdrop of clicking looms, winding threads and bundles of fabric.
This original artisanal business is still thriving, and even using the same ancient looms, but Inga wanted to do more. She studied interior design and decided to launch an online brand of linen textiles and homewares to sell direct to customers. And so LinenMe was born (along with her two actual children). Driven by a passion for linen and firm belief in its inherently beneficial properties, Inga began with a few boxes of linen products and developed the online retail side of the business, whilst working on designs for new products from her home in London. She mastered the challenges facing an online business, and quickly established LinenMe as one of the leading linen textiles and homewares retailers. In fact, she has been dubbed the ‘undisputed queen of Baltic textiles’!
Linen is not only a beautiful, tactile and textured fabric, it has other incredible qualities too. It is more sustainable than other fabrics, using less water to produce and being extremely durable as well as biodegradable when it eventually wears out. It has moisture-wicking properties, meaning it will keep you cool in summer and cosy in winter. It washes brilliantly and requires no ironing (the creases are part of its charm), making it perfect for everyday family use. Linen was used historically as a first aid treatment due to its antibacterial properties, and it also naturally repels insects, meaning less munching of your precious stored clothes and bedlinen. We can see why Inga and her family have devoted their lives to bringing linens to homes around the world. to find out more and browse the online store go to: https://www.linenme.com/
