It’s cold and rainy, I’m sitting at my desk in the shop looking at the grey, Tupperware sky and leafless trees. On Western Road cars slowly roll past with headlights on and windscreen wipers flicking back and forth. Outside it is less than lovely. It is the point in the year that is neither Winter nor Spring. After the leaves and before the riot of bulbs erupt to welcome colour back into the garden. Before the Daphne odora aureomarginata opens her perfect flowers to release a scent that captivates the senses and needs only one tiny sprig to scent an entire room.
It is a natural pause in the A.S Apothecary year that offers a moment to reflect on the year that has been and what is to come in 2017. Our major achievement of 2016 was to open the shop and therapy room which, in contrast to the weather, has been a thoroughly sunny experience. Every morning I walk into the shop, take a deep breath, inhale the scent of flower, product and candle, look in wonder at the shelves, the furniture, the artwork and the commissioned pieces and thank my lucky stars that there is such a beautiful place to begin my days. It is a privilege indeed.
This year we want to make the shop into a busy little hub and so we’ll be announcing a whole programme of creative, gorgeous workshops in the coming days. We are so fortunate to live in Lewes where there is a truly creative group of people who are excited to share skills and run small workshops. We are thrilled to have Emma Harris of the wonderful blog ‘A Quiet Style’ joining us to run 4 sessions on photography and botanical styling through the seasons. More on this shortly.
In addition we have the most tranquil therapy room at the rear of the shop with 4 excellent therapists available for treatments to heal the body and soothe the soul: Aromatherapy Massage from Wendy Spencer, Luxury facials from Ellie Gil, Acupuncture from Sarah Buldum and Homeopathy with Sam Eddison. They are a fantastic group of women and I’m so proud to have them available to complete the care of you, the clients of the Apothecary. I’ll be writing about each of them over the next few days. To book appointments, just pop in or phone the shop on 01273 253186.
Whilst the political outlook might be worrying and the weather is cold as Winter tightens her grip, at least in our little world life is rosy – new shoots are forming, collaborations are thriving, our therapists are settled and our shop is a haven, a place to escape, to rediscover and to reconnect…
