It is with great pleasure that the first post of the year is from the very lovely Ana Green - she talks about the importance of ritual and the need for time just for yourself. This is so important. I often hear people talk about pampering but that is to miss the point. Applying a beautiful product to your skin is about finding the time to connect with yourself. To feel the delight of an aromatic water or a silky cream as it touches your skin is a visceral delight. Scent, texture and touch are pivotal to connection and wellbeing.
Over to Ana...
"When talking to other people about my blog, I am commonly asked how I got in to blogging and more specifically how I got in to beauty. For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in beauty products, the scents, the feel, the packaging and most importantly how they make us feel. As a teenager most of my pocket money would be spent on make up and skincare, I read glossy magazines, followed the trends with interest and coveted products I couldn’t afford.
In my twenties something happened that changed my outlook on beauty and my life forever. At the age of twenty five I had my first child, whilst pregnant I started to check the ingredients lists in my beauty products, previous favourites were discarded and I made fundamental changes to every aspect of my life. Although I wanted to minimise the chemicals my baby and I were exposed to, I wasn’t quite ready to give up my love affair with beauty and so my journey with natural, organic and artisan produced products began.
Beauty products are for everyone, it doesn’t matter your size, unlike fashion where I would often feel upset every time I left a changing room, a slick of lipstick or moisturiser always makes me feel better. The ritual of beauty, became the ritual of self care, of taking time out every day that was just for me. I revel in my cleansing routine, I always feel better after taking that time each day, whilst so often we focus on results our skincare can achieve, I believe it is how the self care ritual makes us feel that is most important.
Seven years on I recently had my second child, even on the hardest of days I made sure that I had five minutes that was just for me. Five minutes to gently cleanse my skin, spray my skin with a beautiful floral water and massage in plant oils to my sometimes grey and always tired complexion. Some would say this is pure vanity, but in reality it is not about how I look. Although any brightening, softening or hydrating effect was always welcome, it was about my worth as a person. Those five minutes told me that whilst I was attending to the overwhelming needs of my beautiful baby for hours each day, I was still worth a moment to myself, in fact I deserved that moment. This worth is reflected in my choice of products and brands, the brands I choose take pride in their creations, they promote positive images to women, they care for the environment and they understand that beauty is as much about the results as it is about the ritual."
