We are currently obsessed with British trees having been introduced to the very beautiful book ‘Overleaf’ by Susan and Richard Ogilvy – it is a delightful series of ‘biographies’ of trees, an introduction to the ordinary life and habitat of each tree that makes each one exceptional. It is this exploration into the life that each tree supports that makes it so interesting and utterly absorbing. Beyond the text however are the illustrations painted by Susan Ogilvy. A page is devoted to both the front and back of each leaf revealing all the imperfections and blemishes that can be seen on any collected leaf. They are painted to scale and in intricate detail – we love them.
The paintings for ‘Overleaf’ are on exhibition at Kew Gardens until 10th August 2014 as part of the Botanical Art in the 21st Century. You can find further details on the link below.
