8/3/18 Rush Basketmaking Course (3 evening sessions)

140.00

March 8th, 15th and 22nd. 7 - 9.30pm

English rush is a delightful material to work with, a native plant with a long history of use in basket making.  It is gentle on the hands and easy to weave with, and amazingly versatile – so many different basketry items can be created with it. If you’re a beginner, this is a particularly good plant to start weaving with. The workshops are run by experienced tutor and basket maker Ruby Taylor, and takes place at the lovely A.S.APOTHECARY shop. It is made up of three sessions, allowing you time to get stuck into the weaving and enjoy the rhythm of it (and gain some proficiency if you’re new). Those with previous experience will be able to develop and consolidate existing skills. Spaces are limited to 10 participants, so advance booking is essential. Suitable for all levels, including beginners.

“What does it mean to have an intimate connection to the plants, seasons and the land where we find ourselves? I’m motivated by the embodied process of making with foraged materials. By the rhythm and relationship inherent in the act of making, of using these materials. It’s a counterpoint to the pull towards an increasingly fast, digitalised and disconnected way of life."

Ruby Taylor (Native Hands) is a qualified teacher with over 15 years’ experience, Ruby is appreciated for her ability to teach the techniques of basketry with clarity, patience and humour. Her courses are popular for their relaxed and inclusive atmosphere and she regularly runs courses in Sussex woodland. From both formal training and her own experimentation, Ruby has a breadth and depth of knowledge. She regularly delivers trainings and courses to Heritage and Cultural organisations including English Heritage (Stonehenge), Historic England and Pitt Rivers Museum. As a practising artist maker, Ruby was commissioned by Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (Wakehurst) to make large scale, site specific sculptures in 2014 and 2017.

I wanted to thank you again  for the lovely basket workshop. It was so relaxed yet focused, clear modelling with space to crack on and explore with your supportive skills and knowledge on tap.  Richard
